about the printmakers' network of southern new england

Founded in 1992 as a result of the coordinated efforts of four artists and the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, the organization initially grew through invitation. Now the membership is selected by a slide review.

For the past ten years we have sidestepped the traditional formalities of operating an organization (i.e. a board of directors with a slate of officers), in favor of a loose-knit network of artists/printmakers who remain independent, yet have common goals. The group meets approximately six times a year at different locations depending on the agenda. From museum and gallery sites prior to installing an exhibition, to school print studios in Southern New England, we try to pick central locations to give members an opportunity to visit different print workshops and exhibitions.

The members' work employs a wide range of techniques including etching, aquatint, non-toxic intaglio, wood and metal engraving, lithography, letterpress, screen prints, woodcut, collagraph, chine colle, monotype, polymer plates, photo and Polaroid transfers, digital prints and viscosity printing. The Network has completed 3 portfolio projects, conducted a dozen workshops and made an educational video about printmakers and their methods. The three-boxed portfolios each contains 15 to 30 prints and are entitled: Unabridged 1994, Intimate Prints 1997, and Collective Independence 2003. The Printmakers' Network of Southern New England has organized numerous print exhibitions in locations throughout the eastern United States.

Education is a strong element in our program and to facilitate this, the group continues to sponsor printmaking lectures and workshops throughout the year for adults and students.
